SUMMARY:Contemporary Commons and Changemaking with David Bollier
DESCRIPTION:Commoning is an ancient but newly rediscovered social paradigm of provisioning and governance that arises whenever a group of people seek to steward shared wealth in participatory\, fair-minded\,sustainable ways. Operating independently of state power and capitalist markets\, commons can be seen in open-source peer production and Wikipedia\, cohousing and cooperatives\, community land trusts and CSA farming\, alternative currencies and timebanking\, among many other realms. This session will explore the broad scope of commoning today\, its inner logic and dynamics\, its role in addressing climate change\, inequality\, and authoritarian culture\, and necessary strategies for expanding the Commonsverse. After David’s presentation\, Jerry Koch-Gonzalez will discuss with David the synergy between commoning and sociocracy. Exercises and role-plays let everyone experience the clarity\, consideration and flow that sociocracy brings. 1/3 of the time will be on presentations\, 1/3 on practical exercises and 1/3 on reflection and Q&A. \nTopics\n\nDeciding together so no one is ignored (consent)\nOrganizational structure\nBeing intentional about who does what: sociocratic open elections\nLearning and feedback: how we can improve what we do and how we do it\n\nLevel\nEntry: This class is most appropriate for people who have an idea of what sociocracy is but not much more\, for example after attending a webinar\, or seeing a video (like our 4 min video or our 19 min video). DESCRIPTION:Sociocracy for all is using sociocracy too! We’re incorporated as a nonprofit in the USA but operating globally. \n\nWe are a membership organization with 190 members worldwide. Ca. 25 people are in paid roles (part time or full time)\, and everyone volunteers. We have organizations that are members too.\nWe are a multi-lingual nonprofit with departments/circles in Spanish\, Portuguese\, French\, Italian\, German\, Hebrew\, Chinese\, Scandinavia.\nOur operations: We both produce content and resources\, and we network (around language communities and about sector interest). We are acting as a platform connecting practitioners with peers\, sociocracy professionals with other professionals\, and sociocracy trainers with their audience.\nWe care about social justice\, affordability\, and equality.\n\nSoFA is using a few refinements on sociocracy that make it possible to grow fast and serve our mission of making sociocracy accessible. The most interesting refinements we use on a daily basis are: \n\nA clear distinction between circles vs. communities of practices. This matters to organizations that have a lot of grassroots and community involvement that’s mostly separate from key operations.\nMulti-sector\, multi-language operations; we use a Help Desk framework that helps circles support each other and build “cross-connections” based on agreements and service relationships.\nOrganizations that want to strictly decentralize decisions.\n\nIn this workshop\, operational leader Ted Rau will show SoFA’s structure\, explain how SoFA operates\, and answer questions to help transfer these principles to similar use cases. \nThe ticket price can be waived by request.
